Plant-forward eating

Across large populations, diets built mostly around vegetables, fruit, whole grains and legumes are consistently associated with lower risk of several cancers. Researchers are careful to note this is about the overall pattern, not any one food — and that people who eat this way often differ in other ways too.

The practical takeaway is modest and reliable: filling most of the plate with plants is one of the better-supported dietary choices for long-term risk. It is an association, not a guarantee, and it works alongside not smoking, staying active and a healthy weight.

Cruciferous vegetables

Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and kale contain compounds that behave in interesting ways in laboratory studies. In people, the picture is softer: some observational studies link higher intake with lower risk of certain cancers, while others show little. The honest summary is "promising, not settled."

There's no downside to eating them — they're nutritious, high in fibre and part of a plant-forward plate. Just don't treat them as a shield, and be wary of any supplement promising their "active ingredient" in a pill.

Processed & red meat

This is one of the firmer findings. Expert reviews classify processed meat as associated with a higher risk of colorectal cancer, and red meat as a probable factor when eaten in large amounts. Importantly, the increase in risk for an individual is modest — it's a reason to make it occasional, not a reason for alarm.

The measured response is to treat bacon, ham, sausages and deli meats as an occasional food rather than a daily staple, and to keep red meat portions reasonable.

Antioxidant foods

Colourful fruit and vegetables are rich in antioxidants, and diets high in them track with lower risk. But there's an important twist: trials of high-dose antioxidant supplements have generally failed to show benefit, and a few have even suggested harm. Whole foods and pills are not interchangeable.

So the sensible move is to get antioxidants the boring way — from a varied, colourful plate — and to be skeptical of concentrated supplements marketed for prevention.

Before you change how you eat

Can any food prevent cancer?

No single food does. The research points to overall patterns of eating being associated with different levels of risk — but "associated with lower risk" is not the same as "prevents." Diet is one factor among many, alongside smoking, alcohol, activity, body weight and genetics.

Does sugar feed cancer?

This is one of the most oversimplified claims online. All cells use glucose, and cutting sugar from your plate does not starve a tumour. The real, indirect link is that excess sugar can contribute to weight gain, and higher body weight is associated with several cancers. There's a full article on this.

Are antioxidant supplements worth taking?

Generally not for prevention. Diets rich in antioxidant foods track with lower risk, but trials of high-dose antioxidant pills have not shown the same benefit, and some have hinted at harm. Whole foods and supplements are not interchangeable.
